Authors@Google: Muhammad Yunus

  • 04/02/10
  • · Microcredit News

In 2006, the Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to Muhammad Yunus and Grameen Bank for their efforts to create economic and social development from below. “Lasting peace can not be achieved unless large population groups find ways in which to break out of poverty. Micro-credit is one such means. Development from below also serves to advance democracy and human rights.” In his new book, Professor Yunus describes the role of business in promoting social reform and his vision for an innovative business model that would combine the power of free markets with a quest for a more humane, egalitarian world that could help alleviate world poverty, inequality, and other social problems. The Authors@Google program was happy to welcome Muhammad Yunus to speak at the Google NYC campus on January 10, 2008

He is the founder of the so-called “micro-credit” system which approves small loans to entrepreneurs too poor to qualify for traditional bank loans. Together with the Grameen bank which he set up, Dr.Yunus was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize last year for stimulating economic and social development from the bottom upwards. He has been talking to euronews.

Muhammad Yunus: Poverty was not created by the poor

  • 03/30/10
  • · Microcredit News

www.1we.com As the father of the microcredit system and Founder of the Grameen Bank in Bangladesh he won the Nobel Peace Prize in 2006. To date Muhammad Yunus has lent over 6.5 billion dollars to 7.5 million people in Bangladesh alone. With his well known twinkling eyes he speaks outspokenly about his fight against poverty. Poverty was not created by the poor. There is nothing wrong with these people. They are just as capable and inventive and have as much potential as others. The system simply never gave them a chance to grow. If you really want to solve poverty you should enable people to take matters into their own hands. His mission even takes place in the United States where the Bengali bank established an office in the beginning of 2008. —————————————- ‘Your own Slum Shop in the slums of Dhaka’ Give a family in Bangladesh a future!
