The Grameen Green Children Hospital
The Green Children raised $500,000 for one of the first eye hospitals in rural Bangladesh. The hospital was opened on the 12th of May 2008 by The Green Children and Prof. Muhammad Yunus. The hospital will perform thousands of cataracts operations on the blind of Bangladesh. Prof. Yunus initiated this project with Grameen to save the sight of many of his countrymen and women.
The hospital will work towards serving 50,000 people a year, 10,000 of which will receive the vital cataract operation and escape from a life of blindness.
The Green Children are planning to support a second eye hospital in Bangladesh.
Green Children Scholarships
The Green Children Foundation has supported 100 student scholarships in Bangladesh. We are supporting a program run by Grameen Shikkha (Education) which provides scholarships to talented but underprivileged children. These scholarships support students of different ages allowing them to fulfill their potential.
During their trips to Bangladesh, The Green Children witnessed the power of these scholarships whilst speaking first hand to the students, whose parents are totally illiterate. Many are studying in higher education to become Doctors, Engineers, Teachers and Lawyers.
Microcredit
We believe in giving the poor opportunity, small loans (microcredit) allow the poor to develop their small businesses and bring themselves out of poverty.
Why loans? When the small loan is repaid, the money can then be lent to another poor person. The objective of microfinance is to create a long-term solution for the poor, which becomes sustainable and doesn't rely on recurring donations.
Outright charity is not always the best choice because it can stifle entrepreneurship. When money is given to microcredit, it is recycled again and again. Millions of women have been empowered through microcredit. The poor have great ability, but they lack opportunity.
